Academic Environment and Classroom Etiquette

Academic Environment
The learning environment at White Mountains Community College (WMCC) encourages free and open discussion, inquiry, and expression. Students are evaluated based on their academic performance relative to course assessment methods, not on their individual views. While students are responsible for learning the content of their courses, they also have the right to disagree with the views presented in class.

Students are expected to meet academic standards through honest and timely completion of assigned work and active participation in all classes, labs, and clinical activities. Behavior should align with a code of conduct that is respectful and conducive to learning.

At the beginning of each semester, instructors provide students with a syllabus outlining the course description, prerequisites, learning outcomes, assessment methods and their respective weights, special academic requirements, accommodations, and policies on participation and attendance. A course timetable, typically presented on a weekly basis, indicates when topics will be covered and when assignments are due. Copies of syllabi are available in the Academic Affairs Office.

Classroom Etiquette
Academic integrity is essential in all classroom settings, whether face-to-face or online. Both students and faculty share the responsibility of maintaining an environment that supports effective learning. Mutual respect is imperative. Inappropriate behaviors that disrupt learning include, but are not limited to:

  • Late arrivals or early departures
  • Loud or prolonged side conversations
  • Use of cell phones or unauthorized devices
  • Use of computers for non-academic purposes
  • Derogatory or vulgar language

All students are expected to follow the Student Code of Conduct as outlined in the WMCC Student Handbook. Violations may result in sanctions as described in the handbook.

Online Student Behavior
WMCC promotes open, respectful, and constructive communication in all online platforms. Students are encouraged to be polite and respectful in their online interactions. Inappropriate or offensive content—whether sent via email, text, or posted on Canvas—may lead to disciplinary action as outlined in the WMCC Student Code of Conduct and Judicial Process.

Students, faculty, and staff should use common sense and basic etiquette in all online communications. Constructive criticism should be shared in a positive and respectful manner. Below are good guidelines to follow:

  • Do not post harassing, threatening, or embarrassing comments
  • Avoid content that is harmful, abusive, vulgar, sexually explicit, or otherwise potentially offensive
  • Never post, transmit, promote, or distribute content that is known to be illegal
  • If you disagree with someone, respond respectfully to the subject, not the individual

Please be thoughtful and courteous in all interactions at WMCC, both in person and online.
